How To Stop Complaining: 5 Simple Steps

A Trappist monk was allowed to say only two words every three years.

After the first three years, he said to the Brother Superior, “Bad bed.”

Three years later he came back to say, “Bad food.”

After three more years of silence the monk said, “No TV.”

Another three years passed. This time the monk appeared with robes and sandals in hand and announced, “I quit.”

The Brother Superior answered, “It’s no wonder. You’ve done nothing but complain since you got here!”

God' word says, ”Do everything without complaining and arguing. (Philippians 2:14 NLT)

Are you inclined to complain? If so, follow these 5 empower steps: 

1. Take responsibility.

For we must all appear before the judgment seat of Christ, so that each of us may receive what is due us for the things done while in the body, whether good or bad. (2 Corinthians 5:10 NIV)

People who complain see themselves as victims. You are not a victim. You are accountable for what you say, think and do. So, when tempted to complain about a circumstance, either change the circumstance or change your perception of the circumstance.

2. Give thanks.

Give thanks in all circumstances for this is God's will for you in Christ. (1 Thessalonians 5:18 NIV)

No matter what is going on in your life, you can give thanks. It may be helpful to keep a gratitude journal to record specific things for which you are thankful.

3. Rejoice.

Rejoice in the Lord always, I will say it again. Rejoice! (Philippians 4:4 NIV)

Rejoicing is not the same as happiness. Happiness is because of circumstances; rejoicing is in spite of circumstances.

4. Be content with your life.

I am not saying this because I am in need, for I have learned to be content whatever the circumstances. I know what it is to be in need, and I know what it is to have plenty. I have learned the secret of being content in any and every situation, whether well fed or hungry, whether living in plenty or in want.  I can do all this through him who gives me strength. (Philippians 4:11-13 NIV)

Instead of lamenting what you do not have, celebrate what you do have.

5. Refocus your thoughts. 

Finally, brothers and sisters, whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable—if anything is excellent or praiseworthy—think about such things.(Philippians 4:8).

Pay attention to your thoughts. Force yourself to think positive thoughts. If you fill your mind with thoughts that are true, noble, right, pure, lovely, admirable, excellent and praiseworthy, you will not have any room for thoughts that are false, lowly, invalid, tainted, unpleasant, unworthy or repulsive.
